Montezuma

Happy laidback town

The draws of Montezuma are its many quiet beaches, thick forest, and wildlife like monkeys, butterflies, and birds. One of the things that makes it unique is its almost bohemian feel. Though small, Montezuma is a vibrant community, made up of like-minded expats and locals.

Located on the Nicoya Peninsula, Montezuma is a small beach village known for its bohemian attitude and artistic residents. It sits within high cliffs and a jungle where the small rivers pour out into perfect arcs to create these picturesque waterfalls. In the town’s center, vacationers explore the charming wood houses and vibrant street life. The restaurants, hotels and beaches are all within walking distance of one another.

The Montezuma Waterfalls are one of the most iconic waterfalls in Costa Rica. They consist of three separate cascades not far from the small town of Montezuma. At the falls, you’ll find scenic rain forest, cliffs ideal for diving and a rope swing. Whether out with an appetite for adventure or looking for a slice of serenity, you’ll be able to find it at this top fresh water spot. Many visitors even rank the it as the highlight of the Montezuma area.

Since the town is largely made up of a diverse and eclectic group of free spirited, alternative thinking foreigners, Montezuma is locally known as “Montefuma,” a nickname given by the Costa Ricans (fumar means to smoke). Regardless, visitors fall in love with the town’s mellow vibe, wild beaches and fascinating seascapes.

Montezuma is a tiny beach town, you can easily walk the town end to end in about 15 minutes. There is one main road that passes through the outside of town and along the coast. From that road, there is one street that goes into town and ends at the northern end of Playa Montezuma. All these roads are paved until you reach Cabuya.

Even though the town itself is small, you can walk for miles on the rocky coastlines of Montezuma, the bay and nearby beaches. Playa Montezuma is the main beach next to Montezuma Bay.

If you continue walking south, you will go to Las Manchas, Las Rocas and Los Cedros. All these beautiful beaches have similar characteristics: white-ish sand, a rocky coastline and strong waves. There’s a good chance you may be the only ones on those beaches since most people don’t walk all the way south.
